Until you sell a car it's yours to do what you want--removed equipment or whatever. You have the right to not buy or renegotiate the price if you aren't getting what you expected. It sure sounds pretty fishy, but who knows, it can happen. You told him the deal was off, so he has a right to try to re-sell it. You find out a lot about people's character when they buy or sell cars. Having been it the car business I'm constantly amazed at the sleazey stuff otherwise nice people try to pull off. The thing here is to not take it personally. The thing to focus on is the car itself. If it's a nice car at a nice price, not buying it out of spite punishes you as well as the seller. Good C900's at good prices are getting pretty rare and you can burn a lot of shoe leather looking. Whether this guy is the lowest scrum of the earth or not is irrelavent, the important thing is if it's a good car (and it sounds like it) and you want it. I'd go back and renegotiate the price without the stereo and/or give him a chance to replace it with something comparible. You can always walk if you can't get togather.
