I appreciate the different perspectives very much. I am quite taken with the idea of a Saab now--but not the newer ones...

Here's what I think happened: when my bf and I test drove it, we are not super mechanically car-savvy, so, we accepted seller's explanations (such as--the lack of freon may be because they accidentally let the freon out during a repair, and a recharge would be sufficient, but *if* there was a slow leak just put dye in etc...then I researched lurking on here and discovered that most likely unless I lucked out, that slow leak would require an expensive repair, which I *would* be okay with doing...and it was highly unlikely his Saab mechanic, a specialist, let the freon out by accident...but I also realized it was more than his ad/he said, he said it would be "fine" with a $150 recharge)...

My mechanic/friend is really amazing. So he just knew every problem with the car--and the seller did not seem surprised at any of them, so he probably knew them, too. For instance rpm is btw 500-600...I don't really mind about that at the moment. So my hunch is that seller was taken aback by the second test drive we did on Wednesday because of my mechanic/friend's superb abilities. And I think tho he accepted the price, he probably resented it and so figured he'd take his own radio. Of course I could be wrong and it could be a *major* coincidence--and he could have his radio case sitting there on his front passenger seat all this time for a year but never remove the radio front--just seems really unlikely. Esp. since he says his other classic car was broken into on the same block the week before--you think he'd be cautious. In the other case he says they took nothing--just broke the window. Who knows. Starting to sound kind of weird--break the window on one car and take nothing; steal the radio from another and don't touch a thing or damage anything...all within one week?

The car has some outer cosmetic flaws (dent, some plastic thing on the headlight etc) and a sagging interior headliner. I think the velour seats are in good condition, by my estimate. I really hear you guys about not passing up a good car for pride but it is very hard for me as I want to deal with ethical people. When I said I did not feel it was right that he continued showing it, and I stand by 'waiting' to see if it sold to someone else or if it didn't he'd replace the radio...he said he had already acommodated me quite a bit--by what? By, he said, letting my mechanic look at it and coming down in price. That seems an emotional not a rational statement. That really makes no sense. We spent all of an hour of time together on two evenings and he lives 10 minutes away.

OTOH as you say--it might be hard to find these cars. Anyway--I appreciate all the input so far.
