I did it on an 89 900T.
I encountered some unusual problems that was just my bad luck. The job is not really that difficult. Do a search, this is a well covered subject. You may even find my plea for help too.
One thing I learned, learned the hard way too, concerns the rear main seal. It is indeed a good preventive maintenance, because everything has been removed and the seal sits right there in plain view. But installing a new one without this special tool is a fool's errand.
It was a pretty tough job to remove the (perfectly fine) old one in the first place. Now, after this struggle to destroy and remove the old one. This novice confronts an extremely delicate, extremely difficult and extremely frustrating task of installing the new seal (without the speacial tool). I tried all kinds of jury-rigs, I ran the risk of destroying the new seal in trying time and again. When it was finally done, I had spent not hours, but days on it!
Beware!
