The most difficult part about installing the seal is getting the inner lip over the end of the crankshaft evenly. The inner lip can roll outward on you if you're not careful. After screwing around with a bunch of different homemade rigs, I've found the best thing to do is get some aluminum flashing and make a circular tube out of it to fit over the end of the crankshaft (picture a tin can with both ends cut off). Tape the seam together so that it is a complete tube. Then just oil it up and slide the seal over it. I just tapped the seal in place evenly with a piece of wood and a mallet, then slide the tube out. The PVC drain installation tool would work well in conjunction with the aluminum tube.
