Ask at the parts dept. at Portland Volvo, still a Saab parts seller, about local garages and shops. There's an indy in Waterboro with a field full of C900s last I was there, who probably has a good tranny. He's the brother-in-law of the former Trident Saab indy on Rte. 1 in Saco, who also still is doing some work, and has parts cars. The parts counter can give you phone numbers and names for them.
Another local indy I like is Chris Jett, does business out of a garage off Robinson St. in South Portland.
Personally I'd swap with a good used without a qualm, just make sure it had full oil in it and no obvious leaks. Probably a good idea to get axle seals and o-rings redone before it goes in your car. Does your power steering rack leak? If so, with engine out is the time to install a rebuild.
Otherwise, you can try junkyards yourself. Not many C900s these days. Call Copp's in Cumberland, they may have something. Or just go out looking. Freeport Auto Parts at dead end of Allen Range Road may have one, he's crushing like crazy these days. Also Brunswick Auto Salvage off the old Bath Road near Fat Boy's drive-in gets Saabs from time to time.
I live in Portland too.
