Frak:
I was really speaking for myself, a total DIYer, when I said go used. If it failed, I'd have the experience plus everything would be whistle clean so it would be a dream the second time around. Also, I'm kind of living in the past as to availability, I remember within a few years when there were granny cars with low miles showing up in the junkyards; they're rare these days. And it's probably 3 years since I was at the Waterboro guy's shop and maybe he's had his field of C900s crushed by now. But it can't hurt to ask him and his brother in law, they may in fact know of a good tranny for you, and they're not known sleazes.
If I did go used I'd look for an NA (non-turbo) car, hopefully babied, and I'd check oil level, pull side cover to check for a chewed up reverse gear, then drain oil and look for metal chips, before going forward.
Truck shipping a tranny is possible, chained and shrinkwrapped to a small pallet. Don't know costs. By the way locked up doesn't sound good.
