What caused the main bearings to fail, originally? Saab main bearings
and connecting rods don't just fail for no reason. Was that rectified
by the dealer? Sounds like they fixed the symptom but didn't get to the
cause. I'm not sure about prices or availability in Singapore, but here
in the states a good low mileage Saab engine can be found @ salvage yards
for around $1k (US). The engine swap should cost less than the cost of
the engine - it's about a days' labor in a shop. There's quite a large
margin on repair work by dealers - dealers around here get $70/hr labor
and I'm sure the best mechanic isn't getting a fraction of that. Add on
top of that the mark-up on parts and one can see what a gold-mine most
dealer repair facilities are. I would investigate whether a low mileage
salvage engine could be found and have an independent mechanic install it
for you.....sorry, because the bottom ends of Saabs are pretty robust and
it's rare to hear of such disasters...good luck.
