I don't share Justin's opinion about auto vs. manual. Autobox reliability in 9000's seems to be very spotty. Every now and then you get a good one - my mother's got an '89 with 190K on the original tranny. But I've heard several first-person and LOTS of third-party horror stories about them. One of my best friends bought a beautiful '88 turbo california car that was on its 4th autobox (original, 2 rebuilts, and one junkyard). 15K miles later, the transmission croaked AGAIN! No warning, car just "failed to proceed" in Rolls-Royce-speak. He put another junkyard box in it and I think it's been fine since.
OTOH, major failures in 5-speeds are farily rare. You hear about synchros wearing out, but that's usually only in transmissions with 200K or more on them (my '86 with 260K was just about to the point of needing rebuilding, and I did NOT baby that car!). Not to say there isn't the occasional random failure, but I think it's way less frequent than with automatics.
