That was 26.5 at 80MPH (not bad for an auto S), from Minneapolis to Dallas and back. I used Lucas fuel system treatment every other tankful down and back. MPG increased from 24.8 to 26.5 by the end of the trip. Maybe better as I did not re-set during the trip. I imagine the ECU did some adjusting as well to the highway driving. Very nice.
And I do know what you mean about the dogginess of the 16V auto. But, I still enjoy driving this car more than any I've owned. I had an 8V 5sp C900B that got better pick-up than my wife's 16V auto C900S.
BTW, took your advice to heart of beefing up front speakers with the stock stereo (AM/FM/cassette/EQ). Got a display pair of $100 Fossgates at BestBuy for $46 and put them in for the trip. VERY nice!
My daughter had her headphones and her Video Travellor and we had our tunes on the fronts. Good trip.
