Like I said though, I only ever see a 0.2V difference between it and the battery, which to me, is pretty darned accurate. And, it has far more resolution (at least to my eyes) than you will find in a typical analog voltmeter.
With the EDU, I can tell when it's time to start shutting accessories down because I am overtaxing the alternator, I can witness how much various items lower the output of the alternator due to loading, such as the cabin fan on high, rear window defroster, main engine cooling fan, big stereo, high beams, etc.. :)
I can also tell if the alternator is operating properly, or might need to have it's brushes replaced soon.
I don't look forward to the day when everything has been condensed down into idiot lights (I think some cars do this already), rather than giving ME the information and letting ME decide what to do with it. This isn't the space shuttle we're driving, it's not like having a few different pieces of real information are going to overload us.. but I digress. :)
Is the EDU absolutely neccessary? No, but I think it's highly useful.
