Ken- I don't remember where I read it, I think it was in the owners manual where it says that the EDU shows the lowest voltage since the last start. This would include the last cranking cycle, so a voltage from 9-11V at power on before cranking would be very reasonable. The display goes current after start. Although this might be a "gimmick" (more lights and switches, although I love them, thats why I bought a Saab) it is probably the best indicator of battery health. It is essentially a live "load-test". I have seen the system work well too. I had a car that would show 8.5 sometimes, but ran and started fine, until I was working on it and ran it down a bit, then it would crank slow. A little while on the charger and everything was fine. But it did have the annoying symptom of the headlights dimming briefly when the AC came on. Eventually, the battery got worse, was replaced and now all the EDU readings are normal and I can work on it with the doors open and the radio on all day without a problem. Plus, no more dimming. The function the EDU performs is very similar to a out of car load test, except you include all of the conditions the battery lives under. There could be other associated problems like poor connection etc, but they all work together to start the car so it's valid info.
