Hi,

I am considering buying a '93 9000 Aero for $8000 and I was hoping some of you enthusiasts could offer up some advice in terms of the practicality of this car given my situation. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I am a 22-year-old girl, just graduated from university, and moving from downtown MOntreal to suburban Hartford, CT for a one-year internship. I've been car-free since my high school days in Iowa and so I am looking to buy a used car to get me around CT and between CT and Montreal where my boyfriend still lives. I've been considering 3 or 4 year old Honda Civics, Toyota Corollas, and VW Golfs for their reliability and economy.

A good friend of my parents is looking to sell the Aero. He bought it less than a year ago from a guy in New Jersey just because he thought it was cool. He did a little work on it and looked at it pretty carefully and has determined that it has been taken very good care of and has almost certainly not been crashed. He wants to sell it now because he wants the cash for some other venture. He's got no reason to lie to me and I am sure would not sell me the car if he knew of any problems, which I see as a big advantage over buying a used car from a stranger.

I have driven this car and I love it. It is so fast and fun and very cool. The body and interior are immaculate. I realize that in a way it is a little impractical because any work on this car will be expensive, but it has brand new brakes and tires and a full set of snow tires. I will have the money over the next year to pay for that kind of stuff, but maybe not after that if I go back to grad school. And I think that in another way it could be very practical because if I do want to sell it a year from now after my internship is over, if I take care of it, I figure I can get close to what I paid fo it.

Is this too much car for me? Am I asking for trouble by buying an older Saab rather than a similarly-priced newer Corolla? What is likey to go wrong with this car? What about 3 years down the road when I am a poor student again? Is this car going to be a dream or a nightmare?

Thanks so much for your advice!!!!!

Annie
