Annie,
I've owned my first 9000 (an '89 5-speed turbo) only since May. Saabs are very high maintenance -- and it's not just the major things that cause grief or take time to sort out. My car was very well maintained and cared for by the previous owner, but I've spent hours sorting out minor electrical shorts, changing bulbs, "regular" maintenance things like fluids and filters, etc, etc. Mine is 13-years old, so it's bound to have more problems, but from the numbers of postings on this BB from owners of younger cars, I'm not doing too bad.
With a car of this quality, you'll 'want' to have everything right. If you haven't the time or inclination to do things yourself, all these little problems and repairs will cost you a fortune in any repair shop.
I've no regrets -- so far -- but this is a very high maintenance car. I've had Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Subarus, VWs, Volvos, a Merc, a Triumph, and a Taurus SHO. My SAAB is #1 in terms of ride and driving quality. If you 'need' reliability and ease-of-use, it's not your car, though. FWIW, my wife and daughter both prefer driving our Sbaru Legacy awd because of its softer inputs.
Good luck with whatever you choose,
YMMV.
Rod.
