Saab Reseller says '97 Aero will be $High Maintenance?

Guys and Gals, I guess,
I'm looking from the midwest to New England for a '97 or '98 CSE or Aero. A reseller in Chicago claims these will be high maintenance and expensive annually to maintain. He then proceeds to suggest the GM extended warranties (bumper to bumper) at $1400/yr for 12/12 and $1900 for 24/24 warranties. I'll go thru 24K miles in about 6 months.
My question: Is there any truth that these cars are/will be touchy and high maintenance (I live in Flint, MI) to service. Or should I expect no worse than my 2000 Dodge Caravan (pre-owned) or my 1986 VW Jetta with 295,000 miles on it?
Also, is there anything that I really need to investigate in the car's history (or physically present by a mechanic) before proceeding. Assume mileage is 70K. I know how to get service histories. A few years ago when I was toying with this acquisition, Quasi or one of the 'regulars' here suggested seeing if the Tranny had been serviced. Is that a concern on a '97 or '98? Any input is helpful guys. Thanks
