First of all, as far as Hondas and Toyotas being more reliable - yes, for the first 100K miles, and perhaps to 130 or 140K. However, beyond that, I don't see an advantage. My friend's Accord with 160K is becoming a royal PITA, and forget trying to work on the thing. So much stuff is crammed into such a small space.
Saabs have independent repair shops because there's a market for them. Is the only possible reason for this that they're unreliable? No. In fact, Saab dealers can be almost incompetent when it comes to working on Saabs. IMO, this is why there are so many independent repair shops. There are some good dealers, too. Not all are bad.
If you intend to have all the work done by someone else and also intend to get rid of the car by 120K miles, the only reason to have a Saab is that nothing else will do. Parts through the dealership are exorbitant, and labor isn't that cheap either. But if you can pull out an alternator and send it into the shop for new bearings or change your own motor mounts, you'll do fine.
