I would generally agree that the Saab is not the same reliability and carefree ownership as a Camry or Accura. But if you take care of it, it will take you 300-400,000 miles. At 30mpg and having fun doing it.
A major concern I would have is finding a good mechanic. Don't know of any in the Flint area, though there is a very good indie in Ann Arbor. The place is K&N auto, and they only do Saabs. They really know the car. You need to stay on top of maintenence, and much of the stuff you can do yourself if you have the time.
I would not buy a Saab without a knowledgeable mechanic checking it out. I bought a '95 Aero with warranty because I suspected a problem with the car. I think I'll get the money back out of the warrany, and still have a good car when all is said and done.
I've got both a CSE and Aero in '95. I don't think the Aero's ride much harsher than the CSE's. The Aero seats are comfy if you are not too wide. Should be able to tell after a test drive if they'll work for you.
I worry about the roads up there! If you are spending some of that time driving south, or in Flint for that matter, there are some awesome potholes. The standard 205-55-16 Aero tire may be too short for you. The CSE comes with 205-60-15, and I believe that gives a much safer margin of depth to the tire. You may want snows in the winter, especially if heading north. Buy a road hazard warranty with your tires.
Both of these cars are very comfortable to drive for long distances and times. I once drove from Yellowstone to Chicago with one stop for gas, and two more to go potty. I stopped to avoid the rush hour traffic. It is easy to roll off the miles. Also easy to get the speed way past legal. I know that avg speed in 70mph zones is around 80mph, and lots of folks cruise at 90+. The Saab will do that easily, sometimes without you realizing it. I prefer to set the cruise at 8mph over the limit and relax.
Not mentioned specifically here, but autos are claimed to die at around 100k. See Quasi's site.
I worry a bit about used Aeros. I'm betting that they have been beaten at least a bit, and may be worse the wear than CSE, or CS. You'll love the space of a hatchback. Found my Aero in cars.com.
