the idler pulley is a normal right hand thread. The left hand thread is why you can put a socket and breaker bar on the tensioner pulley and push towards the firewall to compress the tensioner and get the belt on.
The shock was filled with hydraulic fluid when it was new. The damping fluid keeps the spring from bouncing when a load, like the A/C clutch, is put on the belt. If it was dry or filled with a grease/dirt mixture when you took it off, then it needs to be replaced ($90).
