Is Head Gasket Essential Between Timing Cover & Head?

In doing my chains, and in replacing the timing cover, mangled up the exposed part of the head gasket that sits between the timing cover and head. (The head gasket was done only 40K miles ago.)
-- I neatly cut off gasket at the block. I then applied Loctite 518 to top of timing cover and bottom of head where the head gasket had been to form "new" gasket/seal.
-- My theory is that there isn't much pressure in this area, and that eliminating this portion of the head gasket and replacing it with the 518 would form an effective seal.
-- The gasket between the block and head was not disturbed.
My questions:
-- Is my theory correct? Will the 518 form an effective seal?
-- Is the head gasket absolutely essential in this area?
-- I have not yet gone any further with my reassembly. Should I, or is it necessary to replace the head gasket?
-- If I DO have to replace the head gasket, I'm hoping it wouldn't be too terribly difficult from where I am with this project. Remove TC tensioner, timing cover, take TC off cam sprockets, remove head, clean mating surfaces, apply new head gasket. Since last gasket was only done 40K miles ago, I'm figuring I don't need to resurface. Would I use any sort of sealant in conjunction with the new gasket?
I'm figuring the answer will be to do the head gasket, but would really appreciate your help and advice.
Thanks!
