I like Anders' recommendation of the Nissan sealant, which you could probably work into the seam from the outside without removing the timing cover again. Alternatively, do the remove and replace bit for added peace of mind.
Think of yourself as a guinea pig for the rest of us. If you discover that slicing off the end of the head gasket and using sealant in its place is effective, then you will have blazed a trail for the rest of us! Timing chains will forever be an easier task using the Peter Ingram method.
I would steer you away from doing the head gasket, because there's a lot of disassembly/reassembly work involved. Think intake plenum (and maybe manifold), turbo cooler lines, fuel rail possibly, and possibly turbo/exhaust manifold. Plus, though you're probably correct in thinking resurfacing isn't necessary, what if you're not?
Good luck!
