how do I know if I need new shocks?

My husband, whose automotive knowledge comes almost exclusively from Click and Clack, suggested that I might replace my shocks, not because either of us knows what signs to look for, but because he'd heard something on Car Talk about how you should routinely replace them every whatever thousand miles. He couldn't remember the interval they quoted, but given that my car had 120K miles on it when I bought it and we don't know much of the repair history, he thought it might be smart to just have them replaced. Great idea, but since the suspension fairies aren't going to come and do it for free, I thought I'd try to learn a little more.
Note that I live in an area with notoriously bad roads, and have been slamming potholes all winter long, which I suspect would increase the wear & tear to some degree.
Searched for previous posts, but didn't see anything that pertained exactly to my question. Can anyone help? Thanks!
