If you see a leak from the shock, or if it bounces/hops a lot on the road, doesn't seem to be smoothing out bumps and keeping control over disturbances in the road, etc: time for new ones. For reference, I drive on rough roads too, and my rear shocks went at 100k.
If you decide to get new shocks, the Bilsteins are famous for handling, but are not as comfy. The Boges are a good compromise between the two, and appear to be very durable. Avoid the KYBs. I'm not speaking from experience there, but many people have complained about extremely short life spans on the KYBs.
