the shocks are designed to last a lifetime (supposedly). What usually needs replacing would be the bushings within the various suspension components, both front and rear. By this, I mean:
sway bars
end links
shocks (upper and lower)
front control arms
You can search the board on replacing these specific bushings. There's a ton of talk about rubber (oem) vs poly (polyurethane). If you're looking to transform your car into a better-handling-at-the-sacrifice-of-some-comfort, then look into poly. Otherwise, stick with rubber and you'll be fine.
Also, never replace your shocks with run-of-the-mill pieces purchased at your local parts' store. Saab's came with Boge/Sach's shocks which are perfectly designed/matched to the handling characteristics of their vehicles. These shocks are quite expensive, as well as up there in regards to performance handling. Plus, your Aero already has a higher-performing suspension set-up than any other 9000, so you would not want to offset this balance.
