From what people say on this board, it's unusual for a 100,000 mile car to really need new suspension components - they can last the life of the car, though obviously some do fail and some people upgrade because they want to. The clonks could be any number of things, perhaps worn/loose anti-roll-bar bushes or the exhaust mountings - I suppose you have to look around and prod at stuff underneath. It might be worth asking for a four-wheel alignment to be carried out.
You're right about the age, but knowing what to budget for is problematic. There seem to be quite a few head gasket failures at say 115K miles, and this is an opportunity to replace timing chain components like guides and tensioners, plus maybe the water pump. I bought a car that was relatively younger, with plenty of bills and a nice smily owner, and the first day I drove it I was towed twice with (1) a serpentine belt failure and (2) corroded fan wiring...
I doubt if this car would make the UK equivalent of $4,600 if it were being sold privately over here. But it might go on for ever and a day!
