Hi,
First I want to say what a great forum this is. I have been searching past posts in a effort to a help a friend with her 1996 9000cse.
Second, this is a loooong post, so please be patient. :)
My friend said the car stalled as she was driving. I don't suspect that she was in high boost. It was a cool evening, roughly 55 degrees F ambient. She tried to restart the car with no success. She added gasoline, and the fuel gauge reads over 1/4. I don't suspect it is low on gas.
Having a reputation for knowing a thing or two about cars I was called to the scene. It was late, so all I had was my venerable Ford ExploDer and a good set of jumper cables.
As it turned out, the car would crank just fine. I eventually used the jumper cables, since a lot of cranking led to the engine turning over a bit slower. (is there any way to turn off the darn headlights?)
While initially trying to start the car, it would ~almost~ start. By that I mean it would feel as if it were about to begin idling, but it would stumble, and not actually start.
One thing that seems significant to me, is that the exhaust smelled very rich (gas smell) during the enitre time I was trying to start it. It really seemed like the engine was flooded with gas. I stood a few feet behind the car so I could get a whif of the exhaust. I did this several times, and it always smelled very heavy with gas. I have not read any posts about stalling problems where this was mentioned.
Another item that seems important - the longer I tried to start it, the less it would seem like it was going to start. Just before I gave up for the evening, it was turning over just fine, but not showing any signs of starting whatsoever. Again, the exhaust was smelling very, very rich.
I located what looked to be a fuel pump relay, near the firewall in the engine compartment. It was labeled "pump". I pulled this out and tried cranking for a while, hoping that I had disabled the fuel pump, and that might clear the engine, if it were flooded. Didn't seem to help.
I am returning this evening with tools and other goodies to see if I can get it running, before my friend resorts to having the car towed to a repair center. She has put quite a bit of money into this car, and I would really like to be able to help her out.
I know my way around cars, so don't be afraid to throw out terms. I have printed a huge amount of documentation from the Townsend site, so I think I can locate things. (Townsend rocks!)
From previous posts, it sounds like people might suspect the following components/problems:
-Idle control valve sticking (This is the AIC, right? I will check it)
-DI cassette (it sounds like a number of people try replacing this without success. Thoughts? Is this expensive?)
-clogged fuel filter (doesn't seem likely to me, given the flooded engine smell)
-bad fuel pump (don't think so, as noted above)
-bad crankshaft sensor, or connector (I'll look at the connection, and check for tach needle bounce while cranking)
-bad ignition module (saw this in a post - is there another term for this? Any way to test it?)
-vacuum tubing (I'll look)
-air flow sensor connections (Is this a MAF? I'll look at the connection)
-air intake sensor (a sub-component of the air intake assembly that measures inlet temperature?)
FWIW I am in the Indianapolis, Indiana (USA) area. Any recommendations for mechanics / shops in this area?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions!
