The relay which you removed from near the firewall sounds like the ABS pump relay, nothing to do with the fuel.
The symptoms of driving along and then the engine simply stalling-out and being unable to be re-started, with lots of fuel evident makes me think first of a catastrophic failure of a hose into the inlet manifold. Sounds like the engine is sucking in far too much air for the ECU to handle, no matter how much fuel it lets in.
I'd look for some sort of major air leak into the inlet manifold before going to too much expense.
