I ran into the exact same problem you did (on the passenger side)!
I have the two piece poly bushings. I don't have access to an air hammer and chisel, so I cut off all the rubber with a utility knife, leaving the old metal sleeve on the threaded rod. Sanded all the remaining rubber off, put some silicone grease on the sleeve, and put the bushing on.
I actually just finished the job yesterday, along with a bunch of other stuff: rubber sway bar bushings, voltage regulator, and O-ring at the bottom of the oil pickup tube.
Getting an alignment and two front tires this week.
