I'm sorry to hear about that, but a lot of it is normal for a 93.

I don't know how much you should worry about the chains, but if you have someone who will do it for $600 you are very very lucky. If you have it done, make sure the sprockets are replaced since those are the really shady parts. I had mine done as a precaution, but to this day I'm not sure whether it was the right decision-- there's no way to know until it's too late.

If you have some experience and patience, you can replace the heater core yourself. It a pain, but there's nothing exotic about it. It's fairly cheap at eeuroparts.

Now as for TCS.... I've typed everything I know about TCS into this board. I'm not going to start over again, but read back over the old TCS postings and you will learn a lot. You can frequently figure out your TCS problem without the TECH II, but it takes time and some very orderly thinking. I've tried to help people diagnose problems like this and it's hard-- you've got to be very analytical. Probably it's your safety valve or your throttle. The good news is that there are now rebuilt throttles available for a reasonable price.

Now, that gas tank.... that's weird.

Like I said, I feel your pain, but it's nothing too surprising for a '93 9000. It's one of those situations where if the previous owner got away without this stuff breaking you're going to get nailed. My 9000 has eaten up a lot of time, parts, and money, but after a bunch of work in the first year it has been almost trouble-free. It's a much better, sounder car than when I got it. You may find yourself at that point, but it's hard to get over that hump. The more work you can do on your own, the better off you will be.

That's why I actually wouldn't recommend a Saab to anyone I know. If you go at it like a hobby, it's great fun and it'll last forever. If you want a hassle-free car keep looking.
