When mine was totalled from behind, the driver acknowledged responsibility at the scene and then denied she ever hit me. I do not carry collision on cars more than 5 years old because of the problem you are having: the most you can get is the book value of the car. You can press for the retail value of the car rather than the wholesale value. My guess that is what they gave you. If I were in your shoes I would press on for a higher settlement for totalling the car with the option of buying it back from them at the salvage value. You might take, for example, 4000.00 and keep the car. I would then take the money and look for a newer lower mileage AERO. For example there is a 1997 Saab 9000 Aero Turbo (Posted 2/6/05)on the classifieds with <100K miles for <9000.00 with a warranty. I would consider that a good trade off. The car is younger, will likely give you another 10 years of service [unless someone smacks you again] and net, net will only cost you between $5 to 6K [or $50/ week for two years]. Then you also have the old parts from your favorite AERO to use as needed.
Lastly, don't give up. You can have an attorney write a letter. I would first ask them if they want to get lawyers involved. Their lawyers, whether they are in house or hired, still cost them money too. And they don't want to spend 1 cent more than they have to, to make you go away and keep you as a customer. They were happy to have you, paying all that collision premium for the past 10 years. Forgive me, collision coverage is a pet peeve of mine as the premium stays the same as the amount they cover as the book value of the car goes down also goes down.
DON'T GIVE UP WITHOUT A GOOD FIGHT. But, stay cool. Don't get angry at the people you deal with, then they really will cut you off at the knees or even a little higher. They are just doing their jobs, they do not own the company.
