That's probably a more important question, about their ability to drive safely at that age, regardless of the cars in question. Hopefully the decision isn't based primarily on which one will do the least damage to themselves and others if an accident is becoming something more likely than not. It's a major impact to lose the freedom that driving provides, especially in the areas with no alternatives, but it has to be inevitable at some point, for everyone.
I'd tend to suggest staying with the existing vehicle if possible, if only because it's familiar to them. That alone adds some factor of safety, by not having to remember where the controls and the boundaries of the car are.
