Hello there,

I also converted from auto to 5-speed, and found that i had to jump those two wires where the auto shifter used to be.

You also in an older 9k have to jump two MORE wires in order for the cruise control to work.

I can't remember the specifics but it's all explained in detail in mypast posts.

Anyways... you'll be glad to hear that this problem with the brake lights has nothing at all do to with any wiring in the car... but only the brake light switch itself!

This problem with the brake lights coming on by themselves, and staying on without the key in the car happpened to me twice... and at the worst times too!

I had to pull the fise for the brakes to turn them off at night, and i needed my passenger in the front seat to enter and pull out the fuse while i was driving around town one time... before i had a chance to get a replacement switch. it was pretty fun actually... if not dangerous and stupid! :)

SO... this switch that controls the brake lights, if it's similar to my 1990, should be found by looking WAY up under the dash at where the brake pedal assembly is for a small black switch. it's about 2.5-3 inches long, only a quater of an inch or so wide, and an inch high at it's widest point.

The switch is positioned so that when the brake pedal is UP all the way, when you're not depressing it at all... the small contact on the switch is depressed IN...

keeping the brakes from coming on!

When you press on the brake, the switch's contact springs OUT from the switch, and turns the brake lights ON...

what commonly happens, is the switch's mounting clips break, or get mangled, as they are made of cheap plastic... and the contact is no longer pushed on by the brake pedal when it is released up towards you... and thus the brake lights never shut off.

Since the brake lights can be active even without the key in the ignition... they stay on all the time... making a very annoying problem.

The switch itself is probably fine, but it's a PIA to get ot jerry rigged into position to be operational again...

...you're better off buying a new one.

When you get it, you'll see that installation is just a "snap", besides having to be a contortionist to get at the location of the switch under the dash...

in the meantime, pull the brake fuse like i did, or pull the break light switch out and tape it in the "off" position... whatever works for you...

good luck, have fun!
