I'll start with tools. (this can ultimately become a VERY long list, but tool collections grow over the years).

Go to Sears or Home Depot and get yourself a set of tools. These come in various kits. More $$ means more toys. And they come some kind of case or box to put them in. This is the cheapest way to buy tools. Buying onesy-twosey is just for replacement or unusual stuff, not initial acquisition. Most are guaranteed so if you break something you get a new one, forever.

> 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive ratchet wrenches, sockets and extensions
> A few deep sockets in common sizes
> Breaker bar, maybe a sliding T-bar
> Box/open end wrenches
> Adjustable wrenches (3-4 sizes) be careful not to ruin the nut/bolt
> Screwdrivers (including Torx bit flavors)
> Good ball peen hammer.
> Plastic/rubber headed hammer
> Vice grips
> Dikes/wire cutters
> Pliers: Needle nose, channel-locks, snap-ring, CV boot clamp
> a couple of small punches

Also get, borrow or have on hand things like:
> single large sockets you'll need for things like the axle nut. (Some here recommend a 3/4 inch t-bar and socket for that job. Get it online at Harbor Freight)
> 18" to 24" pry bar
> jack stands (a must: *NEVER* go under a car supported only by a jack!)
> bright, enclosed safety light so you can see well when under the car
> safety glasses
> Consider mechanics gloves for protection, or throw-away latex or nitrile gloves. Either keeps your hands a lot cleaner, cuts down on damage. Not everyone likes wearing gloves, so do what works for you.
> Heat gun or blow torch
> WD 40 or rust penetrant for rusty nuts/bolts
> Anti-sieze compound
> Locktite as needed
> Vaseline
> Silicone spray
> White lithium grease (spray can)
> Good hand cleaner
> Parts cleaning solvent

There's lots more, but you won't even need all of this for what you are planning, but you'll need some of it for sure. Get good tools. Makes a huge difference in how well you can work. Then take your time, don't hurry, and double/triple check everything. And come back here for help.
Good luck.
