One function that is essential, that is not otherwise apparent, is the outside temperature. Besides providing the handy indicator on the dash that you mention, the temperature signal is passed on to the ACC II. Without that signal, the ACC interprets the outside temperature to be -50 degrees C (or something like that). The ACC will then refuse to turn on the A/C compressor to keep the evaporator from freezing up.
I can't help but wondering if there is some other problem that is causing the EDU's to fail. The number of EDU questions that pop up on the bulletin board are relatively low, which means that they are usually reliable, at least compared to other 9000 repair items. My personal sample set of EDU II's are 16 and 15 years old, and my only problem was one failure of the outside air temperature connection, which is not a failure of the EDU.
