have you put a scope on your alternator output? a bad diode can create a lot of noise in the charging circuit to the detriment of sensitive electronics.
i haven't seen much on the board about EDUs being inherently unreliable, so it's gotta be you. i mean something on your car.
i have seen some funky waveforms in the past when the shop i was at first got a nifty scope.
i imagine there is some filtering in or before the cluster, maybe it is shorted or unhooked?
personally, i would hesitate to reengineer something that is usually very reliable (except for the bulbs and photosensor) from what i can tell. there's no telling how deep its claws are embedded in the running of the car's various systems. my guess is 'pretty deep'.
