With a multitude of air-bags, the newer cars are safer in minor-to-moderate accidents. However, in major accidents, the integrity of the body structure becomes more important than air-bags and Saab 9000, for that matter, any Saab, is safer. Saab is probably the only brand that has the "roll-cage" concept built into the car; it is one of very few brands that one can open the doors after a mojor head-on collision. What good are all those air-bags if the occupants are trapped inside the car? What if the car caught fire too?
Saab 9000 won the "safest car" designation by the Swedish Auto-insurance industry for 1990, 1992 and 1994; consecutively, because the award is bi-annual. The critiria is the "least death and injury".
