Would you put $4000 into a '98 w/180K miles?

I'm at a crossroad where my trans needs replacing and there's probly another $1000 for A/C compressor clutch and other upgrades. The body, engine, suspension and interior are fine. Tires, exhaust and brakes are less than a year old.
My concern is the possibility that the engine 'could' fail in some drastic way 10K to 50K miles after this investment. I put 2000 - 3000 miles on per month so this could happen relatively soon. Sure, I can get a new engine for $1000 and another $1000 to install but when do you call it quits?
A car payment is $500 per month for what I want. I can afford it, but having no car payment after a $3000 - $4000 investment in this otherwise sound automobile seems somewhat rational.
Thanks for all opinions - Todd.
