I find it very tough relating to a situation where someone is paying a garage for labor, because I do my own work, and I know how easy many of the jobs are that garages charge thousands of dollars for. That being said, here's my take on the situation.
1) Put used parts into your car, not new, premium stuff. A used transmission will probably last you as long as you are going to own your car, and will cost 1/3 as much.
2) Don't expect that your motor is going to just die because it has 180k. That 2.3 will go a rediculously long time if taken care of.
3) Find someone else to do your labor!!!! $1,000 to install a motor or transmission is highway robbery! Having done this job no less than 10 times, a motor and tranny can be removed from a 9000, and reinstalled again in about 5 hours. 4 if you don't run into rusted exhaust, or other small snags.
4) As said above, if you aren't going to wrench yourself, it may be best to look into getting another vehicle. Anything with 180k is going to stick its tongue out at you once and a while.
