What do you get for your $4,000? (really)

You'll still have a 10-year old car with 180K on it that you drive 2,000 to 3,000 miles per month. If you drive that much you probably need something pretty reliable and while Saab 9Ks are great, they do wear out, and if you do all that work you probably don't want to put more money out on it any time soon. Think about what else can go: turbo and head gasket are bigger ticket items, but then there's smaller stuff.
And FWIW, $4,000 can buy you a pretty decent 9K with less miles and that doesn't need major work.
Erikkson gets about $1800 for a rebuilt trans and the AC compressor is $460 from eEuroparts. The AC compressor is a DIY except for evacuating and recharging the system. You may need new hoses, but hopefully the rest of the system is sound.
Shop around for having the tranny put in, but $700 is not hugely out of line.
To me, it's beginning to sound as if it's time for something new unless you can minimize the labor on this job and are also willing to put money aside for future repairs.
