My understanding of the concern is that stiffer suspension doesn't allow the tire patches to quickly adapt to irregularities on the road surface. Ice racing and driving on snow covered potholed dirt roads are different. I had a 69 Olds Delta 88 with worn out shocks and 4 sandpaper tread bias ply Mud and Snow retreads that was pretty awesome on snowy back roads. In the dry it wallowed severely.
