I wasn't trying to be condescending - sometimes language gets in the way of a good diagnosis.
The good news is that diodes are pretty much diodes. The only ratings on diodes in use today are the voltage and current needed to blow them up.
Let's try this - the connector to the fluid level sensor should be the one you've been removing - it's mounted at the base of the reservoir. Right next to it, on a cylindrical piece, is another connector. It has five wires (blue/white, white, blue, black, and brown), and is connected to the pressure switches. Remove both connectors and start the car. Don't drive anywhere - this pretty much takes out the brake boost. Does the Brake Fluid light go out? If the light stays on, the problem isn't in the ABS system at all - it's in the light. There is (yet another) diode in the instrument cluster that ground the light (causing it to illuminate) when the key is in the lamp test position.
If it isn't the diode, it could be in the wiring from the lamp to the connectors.
OK, say that when you disconnect both connectors, the Brake fluid light blessedly goes out. Plug the 4 wire connector back into the connector under the reservoir. The light should still be out - you tested that already. But testing again won't hurt.
If disconnecting the 5 wire connector makes the ABS light go out, it might be wiring in the area, or something quite weird inside the pressure switch. I don't have access to an older car with that ABS system (I used to have two '88s) so I don't know what the connector looks like. I'll ask the silly question - can it be put in upside down? Did that happen during one or more assembly/dissasembly actions? Just asking, and usually connectors can go on only one way.
If you can read an electrical schematic, I can send you the schematics of the '88 ABS. Just email me - just click on my name above and send me your email.
When you stomp the pedal and the ABS light comes on (after four stomps) does the pedal get harder, like you've lost brake boost? Keep stomping it for another 10 or so after the ABS light comes on - does the pedal get hard then?
Theoretically, when the ABS and Brake Fluid lights come on, it's a sign of low ABS (and therefore brake boost ) pressure. You still have boost at that point. You should have 4-5 hard stops left before losing boost. Since the ABS pump is still running and replacing some of that pressure, it can take a few more stomps to use up the pressure. I'm just trying to figure out if the pressure switches aren't working right.
