I guess I was recalling wrong, you're probably right 16mm, not 13 for all cars would make sense. If you note on reattaching, that bolt can be reached vertically from above with as I said a massive long extension.
The idea for the acorn nut was it will hold once stud is run all the way into it, for tightening the stud down into the cat.
If you use the existing nut, fine, but two possible snags: It could loosen up and start moving while you are still tightening the stud in, and then have no grip on the stud to remove it or drive it further in.
And, snag possibility two, it could be so firmly stuck on the stud that it doesn't want to come free once stud is tightened all the way in. Not a problem if you are just running the stud in thru the downpipe flange and tightening everything all back up. But if you need to run the stud in and then rehang the down pipe, the nut will need to come off.
Look close at the flared end of the downpipe, make sure it doesn't have some kind of a crack in it. And, I doubt this would happen since area stays pretty clean even in rust belt, but look out for rust scale flakes that keep flanges from mating smoothly.
