Unless you're really addicted to that new car smell, you're far better off buying an older 9k, say one with 100,000 miles on it for around $6 or $7
thousand, than plunking down 40k for a new one. I drive 25,000 miles a year. Say my 92 9k that cost me $6500 costs me that much more in repairs over a 4 year period. I then have $13,000 invested in it at the end of those 4 years. If I buy a new one and drive it for 4 years and sell it with 100,000 miles on it, I might be able to get $18,000 for it , so it will have cost me $22,000, versus $13,000, to drive a Saab for 4 years.
That's if I paid cash. If I financed it, it would cost me another $5,000,
so that would be $27,000 total. And my last 900 that I paid $6500 for, I sold for $2200 with nearly 200,000 miles on it, so that would reduce my investment to $11,000 if I got $2,000 for my 9k.
The reason I am trying to rationalize this, is because I'm probably going to have to replace my timing chain, heater core, and motor mounts in the near future.
I drove Japanese cars for 15 years, and there's not one of them that gave me a fraction of the enjoyment that the Saabs have.
