The brothers on CarTalk deovted a whole chapter in their book to analyzing this very question, and they more or less said X and Y were irrelevant because it would almost always be cheaper to fix the current car than bear the extra costs of a new one. This analysis completely ignored emotion, tho, it's just a money thing. Of course in reality, X and Y also have to do with how much you love/hate your current car, how you've cared for it, how much you're lusting after the forthcoming 2002 model of this or that.
Mathematically, it's always a losing proposition to buy new, unless your car is in such shockingly bad shape that you can't afford to fix it, in which case you weren't maintaining it and you deserve to lose the money. It boils down to something like that. They're not known for sugar-coating it...
