A less risky avenue might be to remove the carpeted console side cover, the one right next to the driver's right foot. It is a matter of a few plastic hold-down pins, which are also a hassle to remove, and then you have a large opening to cram your arm into. You can't really scratch anything up down there like with the console cubby-hole thingy.
BTW, I haven't done the fix yet, but on two occasions since I last responded I gave the side of the console a firm but light-duty rap when the noise was heard. That nixed the noise, giving away its general location.
Perhaps an even better way to do this would be to remove the receiver and CD player with the standard removal hardware. Unfortunately, I don't have it, so that's not an option here. That'll be on the list for my next Saab order. Once out, you should be able to better see what you're doing. I think it would be wise to remove each wire/cable and clean with an electronic contact cleaner. In the meantime, I will follow your suggestion this weekend and merely jiggle each wire. Does this system use coaxial cable to connect the CD with receiver, or the standard multi-pin connectors like you see all over the car? What about speaker wire? I think the noise is caused by a ground wire not making adequate contact.
