If you have the old radio removal too for your '91 (you know the pair of thingies that shape like two "C"s), you can unbent the "C" and stick each into the holes in the head unit and they should unhook the head unit.
I did removed the head unit once (for another reason) using the radio tool from my '92.
There are just a bunch of wires there. I don't think the noise pickup is from the CD unit though.
I usually take the easy way out, just stick my hand in there and just start pushing the connects back toward the radio unit. After doing this a couple of times, I kinda know what to wiggle and push and I can do this inside my garage at night with just the dome light.
