Thanks for the info received from folks more expert than me.
I became aware of the BOV a few months ago when my APC valve stuck so that I was getting turbo pressure build up, going offscale before the over pressure Fuel cutoff switch pulled me back down to earth again.
Because my car was due a major service in another month, I found innocently
that if I pulled off the small tube to the BOV valve, allowing atmospheric pressure to the BOV diaphragm, the turbo pressure would only build up to the top end of red line and then stop, without the Fuel cutoff occurring.
I had to put a plug into the small tube to get the gauge to work.
However on a temporary basis for a few weeks I found an interesting amount
of extra boost and a managable solution to get me home, until the APC valve was fixed at the service.
