Let's think about other possible reasons why Saab might recommend Saab branded synthetic oil.
1. They make a lot of money selling it, whereas nobody is gullible enough to buy Saab brand conventional oil.
2. The dealerships make even more money from it. Read the post from the poor slob who was told that since his new Saab had synthetic oil in it, it was going to set him back $80-90 for an oil change. Hahaha. I would recommend syn oil at that price too...if I were a Saab dealer.
3. Saab covers their ass by recommending oil change intervals of 8000 mi. Anyone foolish enough to try extended drain intervals with syn oil is going to have to pay out of their own pocket for out of the ordinary engine and valve train wear. Check the posting on this BB by a mechanic who noticed a pattern of abnormal wear on engines at 100K mi. using syn oil.
4. They are banking on people not thinking at all about the claims made above. Hmm, let's see, a 3.8% increase in mileage. That gets you about 20.8 mi/gal instead of 20.0 mi/gal in city driving. Woohoo! And the -40F temperature rating is certainly of value to those of us who live in Siberia, and to a lesser extent, Sweden.
