Since it appears that many Americans prefer short oil change intervals with cheap mineral oil, while we in the UK (and probably other Europeans) prefer longer intervals albeit with higher quality (more expensive) oil, this probably accounts for the different regional policies on oil changes.
Both approaches, done properly, are probably equally valid in that they will both protect the engine for its lifetime.
I think we should bear in mind, however, that just because our next-door neighbour thinks the same way as we do, it doesn't mean that someone on another continent, from a different background, will too. That goes for us in the "Old World" too, of course (I am sure I am as guilty from time to time as any other).
