Driving with no oil - how much damage?

My wife was driving our 88 9kT to the gym this morning when the oil pressure light came on. She thought it was just the oil level warning light, only had about a half mile to go and it was dark so she figured she would continue to the gym. On stopping in the parking lot she discovered oil all over the engine compartment - the line going to the top of the oil cooler had broken off, taking the nipple from the oil cooler with it.
I knew I could replace the oil cooler with one from my parts car, but I could not detach it from the hose in that car (the same one that had broken off in the other car). I didn't want to force it, knowing how easily it might break off, so for a temporary fix I cut the hoses on both the parts car and the other car and spliced them together with some metal tubing and hose clamps.
I refilled the oil (it took about 3 quarts to Max) and started the car up - it seemed fine. My main question, though, is how likely is it that damage has been done to the engine, and how would I be able to tell (and is this my excuse to buy that Aero now;-)?
My secondary question is how do I permanently fix the oil cooler and hoses? I could get a new oil cooler and line - but it looks like the line disappears way into the bowels of the rear of the engine - does not look like an easy job. Alternatively I could make a more permanent effort at splicing the hoses together - any ideas?
Sorry about the length of this post!
