'74 99 EMS - starts, almost runs, but oh, that grinding

So I've just been introduced to the patient which has been sitting for a month. The alternator light had come on and the battery was drained getting to it's home. Now it starts up alright. But there's a loud!! raspy grinding coming from the front right side of the engine which sometimes quits after a bit. Possibly it's a stuck/ rubbing starter, however there is at times a connection to a major running problem. After idling, when the throttle is opened, the engine punts a bit and then it stalls. One can floor the throttle shortly after starting and get the motor to pull for a bit, however the (very disconcerting) grinding noise usually takes a moment to quit after starting and continues while accelerating.
I suspect a fuel delivery problem. I've not yet delved into the electronic fuel injection system, only the mechanical. Any suggestions for starting places? Any thoughts about the grinding and potential connections to the running problem?
Otherwise the car is in excellent condition. Thanks...
