Well, the culprit was an add- on starter relay. Looks like an AC Delco or some such that someone installed at an earlier date. It seemed to be shorting out, keeping the starter engaged. So the ? now is, why would a faulty starter relay have prevented the engine from running after it had warmed up? Somehow it was confusing me and the injection system (one of the old D-Jetronic ones) and causing fuel starvation. Any ideas? In any case, after a tune-up and replacing the ignition switch (which I managed to fry while trouble-shooting) the little orange bugger should fly.
